Drop in Chair Seat Project

Simple Steps to Covering a Chair Seat

Materials: High quality fabric, Batting about 1" thick, 45" wide muslin, Fabric protector spray, interlining 45", Paper

Tools: Chair hardware, Staple Gun gun staples, Flat screwdriver, Spray adhesive, wood filler, Screwdriver.

Sewing tools:  Sewing matching, Needle and thread, pins, scissors, tap measure, iron and iron board.

Its time to begin this easy beginner sewing project. Turn you chair upside down and remove the screws that hold the bottom of the chair to the chair frame.  Use a flat screwdriver to pry out the staples that hold the fabric to the seat.   Save the cover to use as a pattern.

Fill in any holes in your chair seat with putty and do any additional repairs.  Inspect the padding and foam.  Use the foam and padding for patterns if needed.

Using the spray adhesive, fasten new foam and batting to the wood seat. Place original seat cover on muslin and cut one panel. To cover the seat with one fabric, also cut the fabric from the original seat cover.

Place the original seat cover on a piece of paper and trace around it.  Fold the paper diagonally from corner to corner and cut the paper on the fold.  Place half of the pattern on the main fabric and the remaining pattern half on the complementary or contrasting fabric.  Add 1/2 seam allowances around the patterns.  Cut out each panel.  With right sides together and raw edges aligned, stitch the fabrics together along the diagonal edge, using a 1/2 seam allowance. Press the seam open.

Place the pieced cover right side up on the muslin. Pin the seam to the muslin. Life one fabric half.  Topstitch the seam allowance to the muslin, positioning the stitches close to the seam.  Life the opposite fabric half and topstitch the seam allowance to the muslin.

Place the pattern pieces on the interlining and cut one from each pattern.  Slip matching interlining under both halves of the pieced cover, placing the diagonal edge of the interlining directly on the seam.  Smooth the fabric layers away from the seam.

Position the pieced cover, interlining, and muslin right side up on the chair padding with the diagonal running from seat corner to corner.  Turn the seat upside down.  At the center of each side, pull the fabric to the underside and staple it to the board.  Check the right side of the seat for fabric placement.

Turn the chair seat upside down. Working on the front edge, pull the fabric and staple it on both sides of the center staple.  Work across the front edge from side to side leaving the corners free.  Repeat to staple the back edge and then the side edges.

At each corner, open the fabric to pull it over the corners.  Place the diagonal seam directly on the corner and staple it in place.  Pull and fold the resulting fabric ears to make small pleats on both sides of each corner and staple them in place.

Trim the excess fabric beyond the staples.  Following the manufacturers directions, apply spray fabric protector to the top of the seat. Let dry. Place the chair seat on the chair and secure it with screws.
