Designing a Room

Think About These Things Before You Start Decorating

If you think before you leap into a decorating project  you will be one of the "smart ones" and it will save you time and money ! Many things have to be considered before starting a decorating project.  Money is the primary factor in all decorating. Because there is nothing more frustrating that spending more money than you have or that is necessary and a budget is the perfect place to start.

Take a good look at the room you want to freshen up. Can you get away with a face lift, such as a paint job, new window treatments, and new furniture, or does the room need some architectural changes?  Any of these changes can be done inexpensively if you have the time and if you do it yourself.

For anything major, you will need to bring in the professions. Personal recommendation or seeing previous work is a good way of choosing employees.  When using professional always get written estimates from several different contractors and compare the work and prices.  Money up front is required in most cased for contractors to purchase materials and a home equity loan is a great source if needed.  This checklist is a great place to start your room redo:

  • Look at the room and ask if it fulfills your needs?
  • Do you need a guest room and office combination?
  • Look at the storage space. Do you need more?
  • Do you need to knock down walls?
  • Can you get rid of things in the room or unclutter?
  • Do you need carpet, tile, or wood flooring? What will the noise level be?
  • Do you need decorative rugs?
  • Is there enough natural light? Do you need to remove the drapes and add decorative blinds or shutters?
  • Do you need task lighting for reading and working?
  • Do you need new furniture or do you need to cover it?
  • In the Kitchen- can you work with your existing kitchen lay out without changing the plumbing or electrical outlets?
  • In the Kitchen - do your work areas have the correct heights?
  • In the Kitchen- Are your appliance in good condition and easy to clean?
  • In the Kitchen- Do you need additional storage?
  • In the Bathroom- is your bathroom big enough?
  • In the Bathroom- Does a shower door open into the room? Do you need decorative bath accessories, or shower curtains?
  • In the Bathroom- Does your plumbing need to be changed?
  • In the Bathroom- Do you need additional ventilation?
  • In the Bathroom- Is your flooring suitable?
  • IN the Bathroom- Do you need additional electrical outlets?

Sit back look at your room, think of these and other questions that you need to address. Then think about solutions to the areas you need to address. After you know for example,  that you want hardwood floors, fresh painted walls, new linens. You can go shopping for colors and pricing. Do not buy the first day. Think about everything at least over night. When you feel secure in your decisions, you are ready to start!
