Home Fragrance

Scented Rocks, Diffusers, Candles, the Next Generation of Home Fragrance

Smell That? Its not air freshener! It?s something expensive!  The new air fresheners have been outclassed by a new breed of designer and celebrity inspired scented candles, scent sticks and diffusers?.and they are not cheep!

Americans are now putting there money where there nose is.  They are spending an estimated $9 billion in the home fragrance market.  That includes candles (about $2 billion) air fresheners, diffusers, and aromatherapy products and the latest "scented rocks", considered the next generation of potpourri.  That is not to mention Scent Pods, stick scents, flameless candles and scent stories.

The home fragrance industries owes its transformation in the past 15 years in large part to creative nose in chief Harry Slatkin, New York City based home design president of Limited Brands and founder of the candle maker Slatkin and Co.

Slatkins name is liked with new scents for candles, higher end oils and room sprays along with home fragrances with the added cachet of the occasional Holly wood celebrity, socialite and even British royalty.

He has manage to enhance his products aura of luxury, style and links with charitable giving, while still maintaining relatively affordable prices ( high end line starts around $28.00 at Neiman Marcus, with other candles and $10.00 scent ports at Bath and Body Works.

Male, female, does not matter at age from my 8 year old daughter who has a strawberry scented plug in her room to the older woman, everyone uses home fragrance now, and not just if you live on Park Avenue or you are having guest over said Slatkin.

It?s to create pleasure for you, Slatkin said.  It does not matter what your home looks like, or whether you did the dishes, but when you light a candle, it instantly turns on a different ambiance and it changes your mood.

When it comes to candles, buyers are led by the nose.  About 80 percent of all candles sold in the United States are scented and a similar percentage of candle users say fragrance is the leading factor in making a purchase, according to the Washington D.C. based National Candle Association.  Nearly half of all American women say they use candles to decorate and refresh their homes.  These days, they have got a dizzying array of choices.

Candle Safety:

  1. Trim the wick to ¼ inch before lighting to minimize dark smoke and soot.  The wick should burn down evenly with the wax.
  2. Keep your cancel in a well ventilated area while avoiding direct drafts on the flame.  Flickering is a sign that the candle is in a draft.
  3. Be sure your candle is on a nonflammable surface and in a sturdy holder that won?t tip over and is large enough to catch wax drops.
  4. Keep candles at least a foot away from anything that could catch fire, including furniture, drapes, bedding, carpets, paper and flammable decorations.  Avoid placing candles too close to walls.
  5. Look for lightly scented candles made of hard was.  Heavily scented or soft to the touch candles contain high amounts of oils that do not burn completely and produce more soot.
  6. Cease burning any candles that smoke, flicker repeatedly, have a high flame, or leave sooty resides on candle holders or surrounding surfaces.
  7. Place burning candles at least three inches apart. The best place to burn a group of candles is in your fireplace; don not forget to open the flue.
  8. Never move a burning candle or one where the wax is still liquefied.
  9. Use a candle snuffer to put out your candles as it minimizes smoke and prevents hot wax from splattering.  Never use water, as it can cause the hot wax to splatter and might break a glass container.
  10. Extinguish taper and pillar candles when they get down to tow inches from the holder, and stop burning votives and containerized candles when they are down to half an inch of wax.
