Making your own table runners, napkins, and place mats is the perfect way to tie together an existing decorating scheme to change the mood of a room. Table decor can provide options for using the same dinnerware in a variety of combinations to create a quick change for a totally new look without spending a lot of money.
Breathe new life into your dining area with mix and match place mats, table runners, and accessories by making matching runners and place mats from your favorite fabric, or using coordinating fabrics that matches your tableware for an added impact. You can add color with a theme with every table you set. The technique that I will show you requires almost no sewing. By using these inexpensive ideas, you can make a matching table set for every season of the year!
First you will need decorative cotton or a loosely woven linen fabric. To make things uniform, do all of your own cutting. To make your table runner, cut your fabric at least 12 inches wide and at least 12 inches or longer the length of you table. Cut four 18" napkins. Cut four place mats each 12 inches x 18 inches. Cut on the straight grain of the fabric. To determine the straight grain, pull a thread 1/2 from the raw end of a length of fabric. Cut along the pulled thread.
Finish the long edges of your runner with a narrow hem. To mark for fringe depth, measure 4" from cut edges and pull a thread across the fabric. With either a straight stitch or narrow zig zag, stitch above the pulled thread. Use a flatlock stitch on a serger as a decorative option. Stitching will prevent further fraying during use or when washing. To fringe fabric on each end, unravel thread below and parallel to the stitching line knot fringe every 1/2 inch or use the woven fabric design as a guide.
Your napkins should be cut 18 inches square on the straight grain. To fringe fabric, pull a thread 1/2 from the cut edges. Straight -stitch or zig zag above the pulled thread. Unravel threads below and parallel to the stitching line. Your place mats should be made in the same manner as your runner or napkins.
