Nothing drives me crazier that getting unwanted junk mail and nothing gives me more satisfaction that getting back at direct marketing than having them remove my name from their mailing list. I usually go straight to the wastebasket after getting the mail, never opening it. However, when my husband and my children get the mail, my tables and home office become cluttered with paper until I have time to go through the stacks.
The national Do Not Call Registry may have put an end to unwanted telemarketing, but marketers are still reaching people through their mail boxes. Recent studies showed that junk mail is more effective that junk email. Junk email can be automatically deleted. Markers are taking notice and taking notes that junk mail is more effective than junk emails. So get ready American for more junk mail.
Legislators in New York, Missouri and Illinois introduced bills last year to create a statewide Do Not Junk registry. But not all unsolicited mail is unwanted. Some people like getting new catalogs and sales coupons.
The thing is, is that marketers really want to hear from you. If you don't want their mailings, they don't want to waste their time and money on you. It is really in their best interest for you to tell them that you do not want their mailings. I personally see junk mail as an environmental issue. I'm tired of having to recycle mound of coupons, papers, and mailings. More than 100 million trees worth of bulk mail arrive in American mailboxes each year according to the center for a New American Dream, a non-profit in Maryland that help people consume resources responsibly.
Federal law gives people the right to stop any offensive material from being mailed to them. To reduce unwanted mail, follow these five steps:
