Storage is rarely abundant. Space, depending upon where you live , is even less so. So where can you stash all that stuff if you don't have a closet? We have a great idea that will allow you to create a clever inexpensive storage unit. Even better: when you move into a bigger place, this unit can still be used for storage in any room in your home.
Get started by purchasing industrial storage shelves on wheels. You can find these units at most wholesale warehouses or home improvement stores. Next, go to a fabric store and purchase eye-catching fabrics to transform these units into stylish movable closets.
Choose fabrics with lots of character and colors that blend with your bedding or room. Make the pattern for the slip cover by measuring the frame, adding an extra half inch for seam allowance, and lay out the pattern pieces on the fabric to factor in scale and repeat. We have found that inexpensive white butcher paper is thick and works well for making patterns. Lay out the pattern pieces on the fabric to factor in scale and repeat. Figure out how the design will fall on the front so it can be divided to create two doors panels. The whole pattern will be six pieces. You will have a top, back, two sides, and two door panels. If you add a valance, you need to create an additional pattern for the valance. Note: A valance really makes a statement.
Use Velcro tabs to close the doors down the center and two on way dressmaker zippers at the top to allow access to the interior. For mobility and looks, the wheels should remain unencumbered. For safety, keep the wheels locked. Use your eye to fit the fabric to the frames. Pay close attention to where the design falls and the motifs match and line up. It is always wise to measure twice and cut once.
To cut cost, use an inexpensive solid fabric for the closet back panel, which will be hidden if it sits against a wall. For easy access to the interior, keep valance no more than eight inches deep.
