How to Measure a Room for Carpet
Hopefully this easy measuring guide can help you make estimates when going shopping for carpet. We would like to suggest that you print out this handy guide for all of your rooms that need new carpet.
First, always measure for the maximum amount of carpet required, even if it means that some carpet will be wasted, and remember to always allow for doorway spaces. Never mix calculations using metric and U.S. measurements. Always ask a professional to verify your measurements before placing an order.
Measure the room to be carpeted, making a rough plan and noting your measurements on it. Calculate the maximum width and length that are required to cover the space. Multiply the maximum length by the maximum width. For budgeting purposes, you can now estimate the cost of the carpet by multiplying this figure by the price per square foot (meter).
Traditional themes sit well with carpet. A floor can alter the entire look of a room, so it is vital to get this right before you make other decorating decisions. It looks great when you use the same flooring throughout all the main rooms. Using a neutral carpet creates a flowing look and can be a little less on the wallet. A good carpet can provide not only a great look but they also act as a good insulator in terms of heat and sound. Sometimes carpets are more difficult to clean than hard flooring. Carpets are made of materials ranging from pure wool and wool synthetic mixtures to totally synthetic. How hard wearing they are is determined by material, density of weave and length of pile. Wery dense, short pile carpets in an 80 percent wool 20 percent synthetic mix are very tough, as are cord carpets, which are made from goat calf and cow air woven into a mix of materials. All carpets need a padding or underlay unless they are foam backed.
