When it comes to kitchen storage, the problem isn't always about too little space... it's about too much stuff. How many hot pads to you really need? How many gadgets are really neccessary? After taking a careful inventory of your collection, you may have to admit that what you have may be too much. Let's get started organizing your kitchen and make it functional without all that extra stuff!
Plastic containers should be sorted by size and shape. Each one must have a lid or it is useless. Remember, zipper bags take up less space and work almost as well as plastic containers for solid storage items. Plastic containers are great for reuse and will save you money in the long run, just as long as you always have a lid for the container.
Knives seem to be the hardest utensil in your kitchen to dispose of. Knives that you do not use are a waste of space. Discard the ones you don't use, and the ones you use should be placed in a wooden block ready for use. By storing your knives in a wooden block you are actually protecting the blades.
A mistake that almost all of us make it trying out new cleaning products and hanging on to the old ones. Do not overstock on cleaning products. Try to have multiple uses for products. For example, some surface cleaners can also clean windows and glass. Under sink storage is the most popular place for cleaning products, but make sure this cabinet drawer locks. The area under the sink is a favorite place for a small child to play when mommy is working in the kitchen.
If you cannot seem to part with favorite kitchen items that you never use, display them. Get a fancy jar and fill it with kitchen utensils. Display a basket of lovely dish towels. Rather than taking up space in a drawer, show it off! The most important thing is to be realistic. Stop buying new stuff if you cannot part with to old stuff!
