Inspiration from Art, Christmas Decorations or Color!

Draw inspiration from your holiday decoration, nearby artwork, or the rooms existing color scheme. Your holiday decor does not have to be limited to a festive Christmas tree or an ornate menorah- decorative drapes are also a great way to dress up your home and add some holiday magic.

It can be a little daunting at first, but with an open mind and a little creativity you can transform your windows, and your room, into something quite festive.  Choose a theme with an accent color, and don't be afraid to try new color combinations such as blue with silver or deep red with metallic gold. Go for heavier, weighty fabrics.  Mother Natures originals, including dried eucalyptus, holly branches and pine cones, are inexpensive ways to dress up your curtain rod.  Decorative rope, string, or colorful ribbon make great accents.

Whether you are creating a new window treatment just for the holidays or just adding on to your existing one, decor experts advise you to begin by deciding what color scheme works best for the look you are trying to achieve.

Red is an obvious choice, but consider deeper reds, like wine or burgundy paired with deep forest green.  Metallic gold or silver also easily create holiday flair.  While many consider red and green to be the quintessential color combination for the season, do not be afraid to branch out and try some different hues from amethyst to amber. Try blues with silver for a change or pair gold and white together. Jewel tones are great as well as amber with red.  For contemporary clean look, grommeted drapery panels are simple and sophisticated. By adding an edge or bottom banding in your accent color these panels will give the interest you desire.

After deciding your color scheme, settle on the fabric that best suites your desired look. Draw inspiration from your holiday decorations, nearby artwork, or the rooms existing color scheme.

Although the sky is the limit when it comes to your fabric choice, decor experts suggest heavier fabrics like velvet and damask or opulent silk or satin for a more formal look, especially if you live where the weather is cold.

You want rich fabrics that have some heft and weight to them such as damask, tapestries, and velvet to make every thing look very abundant. Although heavier fabrics are highly suggested, do not be apprehensive about trying something new.  The hottest fabrics are currently woven linens and silks that would work great for drapery panels and come in many different colors.  Another interesting twist are the new woven raffia and leather like fabrics.  These are a little too stiff to be used as drapery panels, but are an excellent choice for cornice boards.

Inexpensive fabric purchased at a fabric store can also be strewn across the top of a curtain rod to spice up an existing window treatment or consider adding a cornice board in your accent color.

Accessories, accessories, and more accessories are the key when dressing up your windows for the season.  Decorative wrought iron curtain rods, tassels, ribbon, holiday decorations, and even some of Mother Natures own creations can be incorporated into your theme.

For a charming ambiance try adding a large grosgrain ribbon, in your choice of accent color, and some dried eucalyptus and holly branches as an accent to your drapery panel tiebacks. Garland and holly can be elegantly wrapped around a decorative rod.  It is a great way to dress things up.

Decorative tassels are also an easy way to add some holiday flair.  Consider ones that are beaded or have metallic fleck intertwined in them in order to add some sparkle.  Beaded tassels work well and when the holidays are over they really make a statement and you can match them with your tree if you want.

If price is an issue there are many inexpensive alternatives that are equally as appealing. Try decorative rope, string, or colorful ribbon purchased at a fabric store. Wired ribbon is great, it comes in a variety of colors and patterns, it is cheap and holds its shape for a long time, much better than regular ribbon. You might also use inexpensive decorative napkin holders around your drapes or resting painted or unpainted pinecones atop the curtain rod.

Christmas ornaments are another creative and inexpensive option.  You do not have to just hang them on the tree. They are a great inexpensive way to dress up your window treatment. Just hang them across the top of the rod and instantly create a festive holiday look.

Planning ahead can also be a plus.  Purchase high end ornaments during the after holiday sales, and store them for next year. Remember don't fret about the holidays- it is your time to have fun and be creative!
