Decorate with Ornaments

Ornamentation: Add decorative elements to enhance the beauty or visual appeal of your home....

Adding architectural detail is a cinch when using wood in the home.  Ornamental carvings can take on any shape or form and transform balusters, appliques, mantles, cornices, and molding to complement any home decor.  This allows homeowners to get the most out of their home architecture by enhancing its best features and drawing attention away from the homes least appealing aspects.  Here is a quick overview of the most common terms related to architectural details.

Crown molding- A layer of thick trim where the wall meets the ceiling to hide uneven surfaces and provide visual interest.

Corbel- A decorative piece like a capital, generally used for mantels, pilasters, and load bearing shelf support.

Capital - A decorative piece placed at the top of a column

Chair rail- surrounds the room at chairback height to prevent damage to walls.

Column- May be load bearing or simply aesthetic. It is usually has a capital at the top and a bese at the bottom.

Medallions-  Ornate accents applied to the ceiling that also act as chandelier focal points.  The designs usually radiate out from in floral, ivy, or celtic motifs.

Pilaster- A rectangular column topped with a capital or corbel and trim for the base.

Picture/Plate railes-  These surround the room near top of the wall to imitate hanging pictures or art.  They range from shallow shelves to slotted trim, which accommodates picture hooks.

Portico - This refers to the entrance area- including facades.

Rosette - This refers to the entrance area including facades.

Wall Niche- Recessed container used to showcase decorative pieces such as vases or art.

If you have added most of your art and accessories and you still think your newly decorative space still needs a little something, set back and take a look at your room.  Ask yourself, does the room need crown molding, corbed, chair railing, or may be even something as simple as picture railes.
