Glossary of Columbine Cody Linen Terms:
A'jour-
Similar to a hemstitch only done on the machine, not embroidered. You will see this on some of the Columbine Cody coverlets.
Boudoir Pillow-
Also know as a breakfast pillow or lumbar pillow Size 12 x 16, 12 x 18.
Candlewick-
Tufted fabric, generally made from cotton, often for bedspreads.
Cashmere Touch-
Usually made of cotton with the touch of fine, soft cashmere.
Chambray-
Lightweight plain weave cotton cloth with a dyed warp and white weft.
Combed Cotton-
Cotton yarns and fabrics where longer, better quality fibers have been combed after carding and before spinning. Combed cotton yearns and fabrics are more expensive because of the additional processing involved, and the better quality of the raw material.
Cotton-
Natural vegetable seed fiber from the cotton plant.
Damask-
Figured fabric originally a single color, where the figure and the ground are in contrasting weaves, generally warp satin and weft sateen. Traditionally used for expensive table linen, now also for fashion, bedding and sometimes made using more than one color.
Egyptian Cotton-
Type of cotton characterized by long, fine fibers.
Flannel (cotton)-
cotton that has been napped, a finishing process where some of the fibers are lifted, or raised, creating softness.
Jacquard -
(1) a type of loom where the patterning mechanism allows individual control on the interlacing of up to several hundred warp threads.
(2) a fabric woven on a jacquard loom.
Matelasse-
Originated from the French word meaning cushioned or padded. A double woven fabric with quilted character or raised patterns fro an intricate and multi dimensional design. Made on a jacquard loom. Columbine Cody has the largest selection of Matelasse in the textile market.
Merino Wool-
Columbine Cody sometimes uses this Wool from the merino sheep, which produces the shortest and finest wool fibers.
Percale-
Closely woven plain weave fabric, dyed or printed, made of carded yearns. Finer sheeting is made of combed cotton or Egyptian cotton.
Piece-dyed-
Describes fabric that has been dyed at the fabric stage of processing.
Sateen-
Woven structure where the maximum amount of the weft shows on the face. Using filament yearns and or lustrous fibers enhances the smooth effect.
Sea Island Cotton-
Type of cotton that Columbine Cody uses with the longest and finest fibers.
Silk-
Natural animal protein fiber obtained from the cocoons produced by silkworms.
Tufted -
Fabric where tufts of yarn are inserted with special needles into an already constructed ground fabric. the base fabric can be woven, knitted or nonwoven. Also considered as tufted chenille. You will see this term used in describing some of Columbine Cody chenille bed spreads.
Warp-
The longitudinal yarns in a woven fabric parallel to the selvedges.
Weft-
The yarn that is used in the weft of a woven fabric.
Yarn Dyed-
Describes some of Columbine Cody fabric where the yarns have been dyed before manufacture.
