 Each of Greenland's quilted products ships with a care instructions label.  Most of our products do not require dry cleaning (but this is recommended as the best care for your Greenland fashions).  For our Vintage Home and San Marino collections, as for most items, machine wash them in cold water separately on gentle.  Do not use bleach.  Tumble dry on low heat.  Or you can line dry any of Greenland Home Fashion products.

Helpful Quilt terminology:

Quilt- A quilt is made of three parts: the top, bottom and center which is the batting or filling. A filler or interlining is the center of the quilt sandwich. It provides the warmth for the quilt and enhances the quilting stitches by production puffiness around each stitch.  The filler can be as thin as a flannel sheet or any of the many thicknesses of cotton, polyester, or  wool batting. The backing can be made of one large piece of fabric or several length of fabric pieced together.

Applique- Applique is from the France work meaning :"applied".  It is simply the art of putting one piece or shape of fabric on another by stitching. Applique has a long history, dating back to the Chinese, Egyptians, Indians, and Europeans.  Some of the earliest forms of applique in America can be traced to the early 1700's when it probably evolved from the need to repair a torn or worn fabric. Fabric was scarce and so expensive that decorative techniques were developed to keep these household articles and clothing in usable condition for as long as possible.

Hand Applique- Always choose closely woven fabrics for applique. Cotton broadcloth, muslin and calico are good choices, since they will not fray easily and are sturdy. It is best not to use polyester or synthetic blends, knits or loosely woven or heavyweight fabrics.

Crewel- The crewel technique is occasionally used in quilt making. It was popular form of working a few hundred years ago and had a revived interest in the 70's. Most crewel quilt making today is limited to crazy quilts.

Turkey Red- Turkey Red is given to a technique of embroidery popular for quilt work from the late 18 and 19's.  Small transfer patterns are applied to white fabric blocks and embroidered in turkey red colored thread. The embroidered blocks are joined to make a quilt.

Teneriffe- Teneriffe embroidery, also know as Norwegian, Amish, snowflake, chicken scratching and depression lace embroidery, gives the illusion of lace appliqued on a dotted, gingham, or even weave fabric.  The lacy appearance makes this a popular form of decoration on crib quilts.
